Fostering the mental health conversation, one leader at a time.
The Yes.Me. podcast will tell the stories of leaders who have an experience of mental illness. It will highlight their challenges but more importantly it will paint a picture of how those experiences makes them a richer leader whose success continues because of, not in spite of, these experiences. When I talk about leaders, I am talking about anyone from the basketball coach at the local club right through to the head of a government department or the CEO of our biggest corporations. If we are to believe the stats set out by organisations like Beyond Blue, around 45% of those people will have mental illness at some point in their lifetime. And more and more, we are starting to hear their stories. I developed a project proposal in which I would ask leaders to openly share their stories of mental illness. Why? Because when you’re a leader, you sit in a privileged position. You are privileged to be in a position to challenge stereotypes. And part of your privilege requires you to step outside your comfort zone and to show leadership to those who follow in your path. You are privileged enough to be in a position to pave a better path for those who will come behind you.
I think these stories will inspire you as they have inspired me. More importantly, I hope these stories will challenge you, challenge us as a society, to think differently about the traits we attribute to mental illness. I hope they will engender conversations, conversations both big and small, which lead to change both for individuals and for society at large. It’s 2020. Let’s talk.
