    Description

The glass ceiling is an invisible barrier, very difficult to overcome, which makes it difficult for women to access high positions of power in organizations, politics and companies.

Thus, despite the fact that in our country women are the majority in universities and have better grades, the majority do not manage to manage the upper echelons of companies. The reason is based on the machismo that still reigns in our society.

Furthermore, once they rise to leadership positions they encounter additional obstacles related to gender stereotypes. But the difficulties do not end here. A study reveals that these barriers for women to rise collapse right in crisis situations. In other words, women are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions in times of economic instability or high risk of failure. It is what has come to be known as The glass Cliff.

We speak of a glass cliff when we refer to a sexist trap that consists of hiring women in senior management positions in situations of crisis or risk. The concept was coined in 2004 by Michelle Ryan and Alexander Haslam, professors at the University of Exeter, UK.

The study of Michelle Ryan and Alexander Haslam

They investigated how publicly traded companies acted in times of crisis. They concluded that women tend to achieve leadership positions in very different circumstances than men. In this way, it is chosen to promote women in command when the chances of success are minimal. That is, when it is known that there are no options other than failure.

The trigger for the investigation was an article published in 2003 in The Times newspaper. This insinuated that companies with women at the helm in the Boards of Directors obtained worse results than those that are occupied by men.

The study showed that it was actually a strategy. Well, in periods of risk or precariousness, it was decided to promote women. Thus, women are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions in times of crisis than in good times.

According to Michelle Ryan, Ph.D. in social psychology and co-author of the study, "this makes their leadership positions potentially risky." She adds: "It can contribute to the under-representation of women in these positions."

Women in charge when failure is predicted

In other words, when a company goes through a difficult time, it tends to promote women to leadership positions. They have more arduous work ahead of them than if they had been hired under normal conditions. Therefore, they are more likely to "fall off a cliff."

They thus place them on the edge of the precipice, hence the name of the concept. They are complicated positions, of uncertainty and of constant danger that produces high levels of stress and pressure for them. In addition, they have a negative impact on the career of women.

Evidence for the existence of the glass cliff has been verified using multiple methodologies, including a wide range of participant samples, and in several countries. Haslam and Ryan point out that, for example, the British Conservative party, Tory, used to select men for those candidacies where they had the best chance of winning and more women in those constituencies that were given up in advance.

We can see it with Theresa May and the Brexit crisis. She was elected as British Prime Minister when David Cameron submitted his resignation to remain in Downing Street as leader of the Conservative Party following the Brexit referendum.

Another example is Christine Lagarde when she took over at the head of the IMF during the euro crisis, or, more recently, Inés Arrimadas at the head of Ciudadanos.

    Stereotypes as the main cause

This phenomenon is explained by gender stereotypes that are still maintained in society and, by extension, in companies. Michelle Ryan and Alexander Haslam, responsible for the study, explain that: “the typical traits associated with a woman, such as intuition, empathy or caring for the group, coincide with the...
