    Description

Welcome! Bienvenidxs! ¡Desplacen hacia abajo para español! You are now listening to "Ritmos Negros," also known as Black Rhythms for those of you who were reaching for the Spanish dictionary. By the way, episodes will be released in Spanish as well for those who want to sharpen their skills. I am your host Brandon Hampton, a 23-year old MBA student at WashU with undergraduate degrees in International Studies, Spanish, and Marketing (also at WashU)! Go bears! "Dance like no one's watching" is my life quote as a dancer at heart. "Sin salsa no hay paraíso!" This translates to "Without salsa, there is no paradise!" What's life without music and dance, am I right? Latin and Caribbean music have recently skyrocketed in popularity in the U.S. Whether it's the newest Prince Royce bachata album, a Bad Bunny reggaeton concert, or local salsa band, these tropical rhythms have permeated American culture. But, how much do we actually know about these musical genres? The voices? The stories? The movement? What secrets lie here? We will travel back to where it all started. AFRICA! What connection does Africa have with Latin America and the Caribbean? How has slavery practices and religion influenced latin dance and music? What African influences can we see in modern day tropical beats? All of these questions and more will be discussed in this podcast. I will use the term “African Diaspora” many times, which refers to the collection of communities descended from native Sub-Saharan Africans. Through research and conversations with well-known guests within academia, the latin dance industry, musicians, Afro-diasporic individuals and allies, we will get to the core of the issue. But, I need your help! So, what are you waiting for? Click that play button and find out! Join me on this journey as we uncover those very hidden secrets of "Ritmos Negros" and explore the history of the contributions of a forgotten people. Monthly Podcast. Episodes will be released in both English and Spanish.
